Professor Angela Davis Lecture

Through the work of Dr. Mark Spooner and Dr. Patrick Lewis and with financial assistance from a number of campus sources, we are fortunate to welcome Dr. Angela Davis to our campus on Monday, March 7th. Dr. Davis is a dynamic and engaging speaker who will talk about her own social activism and various social justice movements from the nineteen sixties until today and educators as agents of change.

Professor Angela Davis is an American political activist, educator and author. Davis was most politically active during the late 1960s through the 1970s and was associated with the Communist Party USA, the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panther Party. Prisoner rights have been among her continuing interests; she is the founder of "Critical Resistance", an organization working to abolish the prison-industrial complex. She is presently a retired professor with the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz and is the former director of the university's Feminist Studies department. Her research interests are in feminism, African American studies, critical theory, Marxism, popular music and social consciousness, and the philosophy and history of punishment and prisons. First Year of Teaching: The Joys, the Challenges, and Hints to Make it Through

Ever hear of the first year of teaching horror stories? Well on Saturday, March 12the 2011 from 1:00 – 2:30 PM the Group of Undergraduate Education Science Students (G.U.E.S.S.) are holding a First Year of Teaching Workshop featuring:

Taryn Blyth, a first year teacher at Thom Collegiate High School

Kelly Gerein, a first year teacher at St. Alphonsus Elementary, Yorkton and

Nicole Romanow, a first year teacher at Sacred Heart Community School

These educators will be presenting their first year experiences in the field and discussing:

  • Expectations of yourself and your students for the first year
  • Preparations for the first year
  • Parent-Teacher Interviews
  • Classroom Management
  • The high and lows, triumphs and defeats;
  • And most importantly their joy of the teaching profession and how that passion has made the first year incredible so far!

    Certificates will be available at the event, no need to pre-register. See you there!

    Life As An Intern PD Event with the BESS

    BESS in partnership with ESS presents... Life As An Intern PD Event!

    Date: Thursday February 17, 2011

    Time: 7-9pm

    Location: Teacher Prep Centre

    Cost: FREE!

    What is it: Come hear about different experiences from a number of education students who just finished their internship semester. There will be experiences from urban, rural, and international settings, as well as from secondary, early childhood, and elementary focuses. In addition to the intern speakers, we will also hear from a cooperating teacher and a first year teacher who will discuss their experiences with the internship program and how it prepared them for their first year of teaching. There will also be a question period at the end of the night.
