Hugs for Haiti

Hello fellow education students,

As you may of heard, the university student societies in conjunction with URSU are raising funds for Haiti relief. Whichever students society raises the most wins a 40" flatscreen TV for their lounge. Here are the events your ESS and the university are holding:

HUGS FOR HAITI

  • Friday, January 29

  • 9am-12pm in the Riddel Centre

  • 1pm-3pm in the Cornwall Mall

  • ESS members will be giving out Hugs for Haiti. Any size donations are welcomed :)

HAITI FUNDRAISER AT THE OWL

  • Thursday, February 4

  • Winners and grand total are announced

  • Partial funds from all drinks sold at the Owl that night will go towards Haiti relief.

ESS members will also be coming to various classrooms to collect money. It is impossible for us to hit all of them so if you would like to make a donation, please contact Robin at howell4r@uregina.ca by February 2, 2010.

Christine Selinger Fundraiser

Christine Selinger, former president of the ESS, is going to hike BC's Nootka Trail in May of this year. This trail is quite treacherous, and is cut off from civilization. It's on Nootka Island, off the west coast of Vancouver Island; this island is inhabited by a lot of wildlife including bears and wolves, but few people reside on the island. The hike takes approximately five days for the average able-bodied hiker, so my team and I are estimating that it will take us around 8 days to complete with my hand cycle. We have to carry in (and out) all of our equipment including tents, food and garments. Because we are doing this in May, we are predicting very wet weather, thus making this trip even trickier.

For more pictures and details of the Nootka Trail, please visit:
http://www.besthike.com/northamerica/canada_west_coast/nootka.html or http://www.clubtread.org/nootka.htm. Stay update on my progress at our blog: http://www.nootkanolimits.blogspot.com/.

This trek is incredibly exciting, as very few people with physical disabilities participate in backcountry activities, and I am believed to be the first paraplegic to hike this trail. As part of our team we have a photographer/ videographer who will be helping us to compile a documentary about the experience once we've completed it!!

In order to do this trek, though, I need to purchase or build an all- terrain hand cycle. This is where I am need of the most assistance. First of all, if you, or someone you know, is willing to help me build this cycle that would be greatly appreciated. Due to the fact that this cycle will cost approximately $4000 - $5000 (build or bought), I am hosting a Steak Night to raise funds for this. Here are the details:

  • Brewster's South 4180 Albert Street, Regina, SK
  • February 4, 2010
  • Drop-in anytime between 5:30 PM and 9:00 PM
  • It's a steak dinner! A $15 ticket gets you a delicious steak, baked potato, and Caesar salad (vegetarian options available) We will also be doing a 50/50 draw at the event.
  • To raise some of the funds needed to purchase/make Christine's three-wheeled off-road handcycle.
  • Purchase tickets from Christine by emailing selingerc@gmail.com or Stephanie by emailing sj.robertson@hotmail.com by February 1, 2010.

Update: ED Lounge

Hello fellow education students,

As you know, we have been renovating the ED Lounge so it will not only look better, but be a more useful space (including a kitchen area). It has come to our attention, however, that the last time the space was redone that things were done incorrectly, including fixing the walls. Therefore, the renovations are to continue indefinitely until everything is fixed properly. We will continue to update you on the progress - we miss the lounge already too! Thanks and we're very sorry for any inconvenience.
